Background

Brief History:
The General Nursing Council of Saint Lucia is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal established under the Registration of Nurses and Midwives Act of 1966.
Purpose:
The Council assists and advises the Minister on matters of nursing care for the sick and midwifery services on the island, and in particular on the establishment of a recruitment and training programme for the provision and maintenance of such care and services.
Other functions of the Council include, but are not limited to:

Administering the procedures pertaining to the registration and discipline of nurses

Serving and protecting the public in matters involving nursing services

Ensuring that professional conduct and practice standards are maintained in relation to nurses

Regulating the practice of nursing in the public’s interest

Approving and prescribing programmes/courses of education and training that provide qualifications for registration

Determining the requirements necessary for registration
-
Granting registration and issuing certificates of practice
-
Collaborating with entities engaged in the development of national policies with respect to the regulation of the practice of nursing.
Date Established:
The General Nursing Council of Saint Lucia was established in 1966, guided by the provisions of the Registration of Nurses and Midwives Act.
